Coming up in PC/OS 2009.1

So like always we are looking at what to do with PC/OS 2009.1

This release is scheduled for a Feb 2009 release and is mostly a tweak fix. As always all important updates will be included. This is not to say that there will be no maintenance pack for PC/OS 2009, there will be but this will be for new users and current users who want their experience up to date.

So here is whats in store.

We tweaked the user interface a little. We reintroduce the Human/Ubuntulook themes into this build for those that want the default Human theme that comes with Ubuntu. More colors are in store and not just orange. We are actually considering making either Human the default or Human blue. Opta2 which was introduced with some tweaks by cris in PC/OS 2009 gets an update to Opta3 which tweaks the look even more so that it doesn't look so out of place in PC/OS and will probably become the default. Panel layouts will not change much if any. One of the reasons for sidelining pcosGilouche is a bug where the title of a window will overlap the close, maximize and minimize buttons. Opta3 is also one of the developers babies and looks better with the human themes anyhow. The only dispute now is orange or blue.

We also include the volstatus applet which allows you to remove removable media with a single click so no more right clicking in the Navigator applet to dismount volumes.

Filezilla replaces gFTP, its a nicer utility and is more feature rich.

One of the most requested features is to provide access to root filemanager so in the menu we have that option now, you will need to know the root password to access this function.

We are also looking to clean up the system. Make it so non crucial services dont start up and non needed packages are removed totally. More wireless drivers will be provided if not natively, for ndiswrapper.

We will also audit open desktop more to see what can be moved into the feature pak and what needs to stay, we do need user feedback so do participate in the forums

OpenCore 2 will be the most changed in terms of user interface. More details on that later.

So basically some more exciting things in store in terms of performance, and features. But once again, a work in progress so some things are subject to change.

64 bit strategy

Well as most everyone has probably heard. This Friday I will be picking up a 64 bit machine. If you want to know how you can help visit the forum post on the subject.

http://pcos08.freeforums.org/64bit-support-t172.html

Which brought up some conversation on what the strategy is for PC/OS on 64 bit hardware.

PC/OS will have three flavors on 64 bit hardware.

PC/OS Open64 Workstation 8.1

PC/OS Open64 Server 8.1

PC/OS Open64 Core 1.0

The only CD release will be Open64 Core, as most 64 bit machines ship with DVD drives. There will be no cosmetic differences between the 32 bit and 64 bit releases and 32 bit releases will NOT be discontinued. As 64 bit continues to make the rise we will phase out 32 bit support which will probably be around 2011 or 2012 but market trends will be monitored to reflect that timetable. We are currently determining whether to base the release on the LTS or Ubuntu 8.10.

The functionality, and audience of the releases will mimic the 32 bit releases.

We are looking to a beta version around the spring thaw and a general release around summer 2009.

Myself and the rest of the development team look forward to bringing PC/OS to the 64 bit platform and still a strong possibility for Cell and PowerPC.

PC/OS OpenServer System 8.3

PC/OS OpenServer System has been given a number designator to distinguish itself. Servers are not updated as much as desktops so we decided to give it a numerical letter rather than a year. PC/OS the desktop release will be unchanged in the designation.

PC/OS Appliance and OpenCore also follow the numerical designation rather than the year.

PC/OS 2009v2

Upon working on PC/OS 2009v2, I had watched a PDC video on Windows 7 desktop. There the presenter said something interesting. Look to the past for some interesting functionality. So I did that, I looked at CDE, hardly interesting except minimized icons on the desktop. Then I looked at NeXTStep with the wharf that was later recreated as the dock in Mac OS X. So I said, what if I could recreate something like that for PC/OS?.

Well upon playing around this is what I came up with.

A shortened bottom launch surface that the user could add as many shortcuts as he wanted, the sidebar would be the Iconbox applet for XFCE that would show all the open and minimized applications on the system. It would grow as more applications were opened and instead of text it would just show the application icon.

Then I looked at the bottom bar and said it looks a bit crowded. so I decided to extend the bottom bar all the way through. which I thought didnt look bad. So tell me what you think and send in some feedback and let me know what you think. Of course this isnt the absolute change and you probably wont see this layout except for this post.

PC/OS OpenServer System and PC/OS Appliance

Now that PC/OS OpenDesktop and OpenWorkstation are out the door and right now headed for delivery now is the time to concentrate on PC/OS OpenServer System 2008v3 and PC/OS Appliance 2009.

OpenServer System is a point release because its just a update release. There is no new major functionality except for the edition of VLC 0.9.5 as a streaming platform. Everything else will pretty much be updated.

PC/OS Appliance 2009 will be more in line with what the desktop versions of PC/OS except it will be more targeted towards netbooks like it has been in the past.

Delivery delay

Hey everyone, Im trying now to get PC/OS 2009 uploaded to ibiblio.org. They upgraded their servers and it appears to be wreaking all types of havok so bear with me while I try to get this damn thing off the grround. I do apologize for the delays and hopefully I will have it in your hands sooner than later.

PC/OS Discussion on changes

As people have seen from the early screenshots there have been quite a few changes in PC/OS. These changes have stemmed from interface to whats actually included in the distribution. So I decided to go through and explain why some of the changes were made and a dialog of why I had to scale back a little. The interface seems to be the most important so lets discuss that.

The Interface:

Early in the 2009 development cycle we had quite a few discussions with customers and users and they informed us that while they liked the interface it was still too UNIX and the biggest issue they had was getting users used to it. So they wanted some familiarity and this is what we came up with.
The shelf at the bottom similar to Windows XP or Vista. Gadgets was a good idea, people liked em so we kept them in the distribution, so screenlets is included. Why isnt it started by default? Because Screenlets is an optional program, users start it if the need it otherwise they get a clean desktop. We also have a Windows list similar to Mac OS that allows you to view all you open applications. On the shelf we put the most widely used applications, Web Browser, e-mail and terminal. We also have the Pager, CPU graph and volume control and a not taking application.

The next phase of the interface change was the Window theme. While I liked the BeOS theme and still think its viable the team and customers did bring up a good point. The interface was excellent but there was no clear indication of what the buttons do and the outline was such that if they tried to hit close they would hit maximize by accident. So I looked for the most professional looking theme I could and it was included in XFCE called Moheli. The only problem with Moheli was that the concern was raised that it just looks way to much like BlueCurve, used in Red Hat Linux. So I looked around and found one called xGilouche, the only problem was that the text and buttons were black so it looked horrible and the buttons were to close together. So Cris, who works on interface, came up with pcosGilouche which has button spacing perfect and the text is readable and not so cluttered.

The orange default theme was actaully picked because it looks bright, was inviting and did not clash with the system default wallpaper plus it was kind of a tribute to the Ubuntu team since we build upon Ubuntu. The wallpaper I think is a KDE wallpaper which we all liked and thought it looked professional so we decided to go ahead with that idea and thus the new interface was born.

Next, users still like the all in one access to their removable and physical storage so the tracker was put back in and we renamed it Navigator, which is the places applet from XFCE.

This is one shop access to everything from CD's, iPods, and all physical media. So that the shelf wasnt so cluttered we did take out the text from all applets.

Application lineup
-----------------

We did a lot in terms of application lineup. We updated to OpenOffice.org 3.0, Abiword 2.6.4, Pidgin 2.5, Flash 10, VLC 0.9.5, uFraw, PhotoPrinter, TrueCrypt as well as the newest Thunderbird and Firefox applications to say the least. All important security updates have also been applied. But lets get to why Flock was removed. Flock was removed because it was bloated and had a lot of features my customers and users didnt want or just didnt need. The Flock development team was non-responsive to several inquiries made We had made the decision to remove Flock way before Flock Inc. decided to ask us to remove it. It was replaced with Firefox 3. It was decided to put in MediaPlayer Connectivity so that users could pick and choose which application to use when playing back web video although VLC is the default.

We had originally planned to ship wicd but with the liveCD format and the subsequent reinstall it played proverbial havok so we had to scale back to Network Manager 0.6. We also removed Audacious and put in Exaile as users wanted a more streamlined audio experience. Eclipse, QTDesigner and Gambas 2 were the most requested development environments so we put those in there.

Font management also was a requested feature so we put in FontMatrix..

The multimedia creation tools have been scaled back and users have a subset in there but the rest of them that would create a compelling alternative to UbuntuStudio are now offered in a seperate bonus disk. In this disk we also included to real time kernel thats used in Ubuntu studio so users can use that kernel should they decide to.

So while a lot has changed from original plans we still have a very worthwhile release. One that Im satisfied with. A lot of work has gone into it and I do hope everyone does appreciate it. PC/OS is growing and I look forward to the future.

We do believe that with the feature set we are a viable alternative to other distro. We believe current users, new users, developers and professionals from allwalks can use this release.

PC/OS 2009 Release status

We are still aiming for a 15th maybe 16th release. Right now Im just creating the feature paks and tweaking some in terms of interface.

PC/OS OpenCore 1.0 Released

Today, Wed November 5th 2008, the PC/OS team releases a new addition to the PC/OS family. This release is called PC/OS OpenCore 1.0. We will now go into a FAQ type discussion to tell you what OpenCore is and more importantly, what it isnt.

What is PC/OS OpenCore 1.0?

PC/OS OpenCore 1.0 is a release that is a barebones system with the basic packages installed and nothing more.

Who is PC/OS OpenCore targetting?

PC/OS OpenCore 1.0 is targetted towards the hobbyists and tech enthhusiasts or anyone who wants a barebones system that they can easily customize and deploy to do specific tasks.

Where did the idea come from?

PC/OS OpenCore started out as PC/OS VirtualMachine, the purpose of that release was to provide a basic platform for the purpose of deploying Virtual Machines using Virtual Box so that people who just wanted basic VM functionality. Well licensing fell through and I was called yesterday morning and told NO. I was getting ready to scrap the idea and the team came together and came up with this idea. The idea is simply similar to Gentoo. Users can customize their own distribution, add the packages they want and not have to sift through menus and remove packages they dont want. So if users want to create a scientific workstation, they can, if they want to create a design or development workstation, if they want to create a virtualization platform they can. If they want to create a file/print server only or simply just a web server they have that option.

WAAH, it doesnt have Java, Flash or WMV playback?

This release strips out many pieces of non-essential software. If you want those features buy OpenWorkstation or OpenDesktop.

Why a 1.0 rating and not the 2009 title?

PC/OS OpenCore 1.0 will not be updated as much as The OpenWorkstation, OpenServer and OpenDesktop line. It will be updated just not as frequently.

What packages are included in PC/OS OpenCore?

Brasero, OpenSSH, OpenVPN, gFTP, Remote Desktop Viewer, Remastersys. Most non essential software has been removed. No multimedia codecs, no games, no office software, no web browsers, no IM clients.

Will you submit OpenCore to the FSF for inclusion to their free distro pages?

No. While OpenCore contains no proprietary software it does use the Ubuntu kernel which has a few binary blobs. That isnt the purpose of PC/OS OpenCore. if you want an FSF certified distribution I recommend gNewSense or Ututo.

You make a reference to Gentoo, are they a competitor to this release?

No, Gentoo and others are source based distros, you have to build from source. OpenCore is binary based, you use Synaptic and Deb packages.

When will it be available for download?

In 6 minutes.

Where will it be available?

Here

Uses for PC/OS OpenCore

Last night during our conversation between the team members and we came up with the idea for an OpenCore OS we decided what criteria for the system.

As lightweight as possible. For this purpose everything non-essential has mostly been removed. We included things that users may want to use such as OpenVPN and OpenSSH. We also included a CD burning app, brasero, remastersys.

The user is in control of applications. The user decides on the packages from web browser to development environment. The user decides. If you want to build a scientific workstation, you can. If you want to build a developer workstation you can. If you want to build a technical workstation you can. If you want to create a virtual machine host, you the user are in charge and when you have your perfect experience you can use remastersys to throw it all together in a LiveCD.

What PC/OS OpenCore is not. It is not a completely free distribution, it does lack all the proprietary codecs and no proprietary software is installed by default but the kernel still is the vanilla Ubuntu kernel which has binary blobs. If you want a completely free distribution, you can try gNewSense or Ututu.

PC/OS Virtual Machine rebranded PC/OS OpenCore

Ok everyone, after having a late night pow-wow with the rest of the team last night despite it being election night we have come up with a new purpose for the lightweight stripped down OS known as PC/OS Virtual Machine. The team and I think that there is a need for a core distro that boots in 30 seconds. So we came up with an OpenCore concept. This concept allows you, the user to decide where you want to deploy, how you want to deploy and what packages you want to deploy. Before I make feature Paks and offline repos we will have to collect usage data. SSH and other packages will be delivered so basically its a stripped down version of Server but it can be built into a desktop system as well.

Since all the work is done and all I have to do is rip out VirtualBox and who knows, we may have something tonight. We have been working hard all night and we pretty much concluded talks at 5 am. You can use VirtualBox 2.0.4 from Suns site.

PC/OS Virtual Machine Delayed Indefinately

I have the product ready, I have the ISO built and I cant post it.

When I first started this initiative I went to Sun Microsystems and explained what I wanted to do, how I wanted to do it and distribute it. I was told fine, it was a great idea, Showcased Suns xVM technology and it was a win win. Well not so. This morning I was e-mailed and told that Sun doesnt want me distributing the packages from the site because they are just under a Personal Use and Evaluation License after I was given the go ahead. The funny thing is that I even asked about that and was told I was OK. I was told I can redistribute the OSE package and that was the only permitted redistributable package. Well the one in the Ubuntu repositories is old, I tried to compile 2.0.4 OSE but it keeps failing. So with so little time left, Im stuck with either publishing with the old release or postponing until Suns nimrod developers can help me decipher the error messages. or ship with Xen and/or ship with VMPlayer. So it will be delayed until questions are answered. Basically, I had the rug pulled out from under my feet less than 24 hours before I intended to ship.

I do apologize, this was a release that a bunch of people were waiting for and I hate to have to do this.

PC/OS 2009 wrapped up

Testing of PC/OS and debugging has finally finished. After some bug fixing and having to roll back some changes we are now with a release I can be proud of and one that in my testers eyes is a winner. The UI changes out of the way here is the theme lineup. You have the basic XFCE themes. Moheli and Nodoka Human are the default themes. You also have a Red, Green and Blue theme. They are alos available in a dark theme as illustrated below but thats not the default. That was a special request that I had

OpenOffice.org 3.0 has been added and is stable as has the Gimp 2.6 and Pidgin 2.5. Vlc o.9.5 made it into both desktop releases. The XFCE menu has stayed intact, I contemplated using the Mint Menu and/or the Sled menu through XFapplet but the overhead would have been prohibitive. Fontmatrix has been added as has the latest Scribus and Wine. OpenWorkstation has a video converter and video editing app. This is because after talking to some of my control group some of them do lightweight video editing. QT Designer 4 has also been added to the roundup of developers tools so that developers can decide whether they want to do GTK programming or QT. A Multimedia Pak will be added for purchase as well as the base install so like OpenServer System users will recieve 2 disks. Some of the backtracks I had to do. I went back to Exaile and GTKPod. Since Floola no longer supports the Rocker and just supports the iPod I really saw no need to leave GTKPod. It works with the touch as well so at anytime iPods dont work I may have to devise an alternative plan such as Banshee or something. Wammu, Mobile Phone manager has been added and seems to work with many models. The newest LikeWise and Samba have been added to this release as well. A list of all shipped Applications will be posted at time of availability.

As soon as I pack the Multimedia Pak and Add-On Paks PC/OS 2009 will be made available.

Ubuntu 8.10 and PC/OS

I first of all want to congratulate the Ubuntu team on the release of intrepid. They worked long and hard on this release and it does show.

So what does this mean for PC/OS?

PC/OS is still based on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy. This has nothing to do with being behind the times. I have upgraded several packages in Hardy from the initial release. Hardy is well tested, stable and works well. Merlin which is the experimental version of PC/OS will be released in December in OpenDesktop version only.

Intrepid is not an LTS release and I stick with my plan that the most stable versions of PC/OS will be LTS releases. PC/OS 2009 will be released in time for Christmas actually in approximately 2 to three weeks. I have had to roll back on some changes in order to make it as stable as I could. Stability and security are paramount to me and I wont rush a release due to those.

PC/OS Virtual Machine

Due to extensive testing the release went past the release date of Oct 31 and will be released this Wed Nov 5
