64 bit strategy

Well as most everyone has probably heard. This Friday I will be picking up a 64 bit machine. If you want to know how you can help visit the forum post on the subject.

http://pcos08.freeforums.org/64bit-support-t172.html

Which brought up some conversation on what the strategy is for PC/OS on 64 bit hardware.

PC/OS will have three flavors on 64 bit hardware.

PC/OS Open64 Workstation 8.1

PC/OS Open64 Server 8.1

PC/OS Open64 Core 1.0

The only CD release will be Open64 Core, as most 64 bit machines ship with DVD drives. There will be no cosmetic differences between the 32 bit and 64 bit releases and 32 bit releases will NOT be discontinued. As 64 bit continues to make the rise we will phase out 32 bit support which will probably be around 2011 or 2012 but market trends will be monitored to reflect that timetable. We are currently determining whether to base the release on the LTS or Ubuntu 8.10.

The functionality, and audience of the releases will mimic the 32 bit releases.

We are looking to a beta version around the spring thaw and a general release around summer 2009.

Myself and the rest of the development team look forward to bringing PC/OS to the 64 bit platform and still a strong possibility for Cell and PowerPC.
