What exactly is PC/OpenSystems LLC?
PC/OpenSystems LLC is an enterprise solutions and software service provider based in Raleigh, North Carolina. We also perform development consulting for all stages of the process for various sectors : private, educational, government and research.
What products do we offer?
Mostly operating systems. PC/OpenSystems is the brains behind 6 different OS distributions. Three of the names should be familiar ones : Freespire, Linspire and Xandros. We also develop two embedded Linux OS’ - one based on CentOS, the other Debian-based. To complete our portfolio a custom FreeBSD solution is available.
What exactly are we announcing today?
Today we are announcing the update to our enterprise solutions : OpenDesktop, OpenServer and Cloud.
Why Xandros?
The most obvious one is that we own it. But also, Xandros has pedigree in the Enterprise solutions market and we wanted to differentiate our newest best-of-breed product from Linspire, with its home-user-OS reputation; not doing so would have led to a lot of unnecessary confusion. Customers visiting https://www.linspirelinux.com, purchasing Linspire and turning around and saying “Oh wait, this isn’t the enterprise release” Hence our decision.
What solutions do we provide for the Enterprise?
Xandros OpenDesktop, Xandros OpenServer and Xandros Cloud. OpenDesktop is our latest and greatest take on a contemporary desktop solution; office suites and productivity apps at your fingertips, OD is geared towards high-performance workstations. OpenServer is exactly what claims to be : a high availability server solution. OpenCloud utilizes either Google or Microsoft online apps and is extremely popular with our education customers
Why base these solutions on 18.04 LTS and not 20.04?
Remember this is an UPDATE to a current product. The enterprise and home markets have differing expectations and needs The former appreciates stability above all else; home users can deal with the cutting edge kernels for multimedia and gaming. Enterprise users require a stable supported base that will continue to run their line-of-business software well into the future. OS/4 OpenDesktop was released in 2012; PC/OpenSystems just ended 32 and 64 bit support for that release. For our critics or anyone else that thinks that we’re a fly-by-night operation, think again. We have repeatedly proven to our customers that we are capable of supporting our products for years to come. People migrating from OS/4 to Xandros will find the look and feel familiar, the focus on performance identical. That being said, Xandros’ codebase will be updated to 20.04 by Fall 2021.
Is Xandros built like Linspire?
Freespire is the base from which Linspire and Xandros are built. Xandros is a little bit different, offering a variety of custom kernels and additional software repositories.
Will there be an additional charge for Xandros to current customers?
No. As stated this is an update to current solutions not a new product. Current support subscriptions will be supported and all customers who wish to, can upgrade their systems immediately. The only difference now is that there is no longer a download edition. We will provide downloads to current customers and for new customers who want this option. All new PCOS customers will get a Xandros retail package regardless.
