As many of you know SGI is ending support for the IRIX line of products this month, December 2013. While it is a sad day when this iconic system comes to an end many non-geeks will remember the IRIX operating system and Silicon Graphics fine line of systems from the movie Jurassic Park. While for many, they have migrated away from IRIX and have gone to Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Enterprise Linux. For others, they have not migrated over. We have been interviewing IRIX users through forums and other online media and we have listened to those who have not migrated. We asked their concerns and what would they need as an alternative.
The answers ranged from a powerful workstation, and something they can integrate into their data center and an operating system that can be intuitive, easy to use and gets out of the way. With this in mind we set out to build a product that is both functional and powerful. One that integrates well into the data center and one that is as easy to use as the Silicon Graphics IRIX operating system. With that we came up with the Black Lab ExtremeStation.
The Black Lab ExtremeStation has the following configuration:
PROCESSOR: Intel Core i3-2120 3.30GHz,
RAM: 16GB DDR3
STORAGE: 1TB HDD
NETWORKING: Gigabit LAN
USB PORTS: 6 USB Ports
OPTICAL DRIVE: DVDRW, BLU-RAY PLAYER
VIDEO CARD: Radeon HD 5450 Video Card - 2GB, DDR3
SOUND CARD: Full-Duplex Playback And Recording Supports Dolby® Digital EX And DTS ES 6.1/7.1 CH DVD Soundtrack Playback
STORAGE EXPANDABILITY: Internal Card Reader with USB and eSATA - 3 Port USB 2.0, 1 Port USB 3.0, 1 Port eSATA, 6 Slot Card Reader
INPUT: keyboard and mouse.
