How we update our distributions

Many people have asked us; How often are your distributions updated?  Well we have two different ways we update our distributions.  One set of those distributions is for home and consumer use and the other one is our enterprise Linux distribution meant for businesses, schools, researchers and developers.

We base our distributions on Ubuntu's LTS release.  So we are just like Pop_OS, Linux Mint, ZorinOS and many more of your favorite community based distributions.  We take Ubuntu and strip out many of their default apps and add our own apps and features to the distribution.  We also strip out many of Canonicals own features that they add which includes; Ubuntu Advantage, SNAP's and much of Ubuntu's branding.

While Linux Mint, ZorinOS and Pop_OS create distribution releases based on Canonicals non-LTS releases we stick with only LTS releases.

Our consumer and home distributions, Linspire and Freespire, follow every new LTS release.  So during 12 months after Canonical releases a new LTS release we go to work building the new releases and testing the new releases.  We also work with beta testers and partners to make sure we work out as many bugs as we can.  If we have to make any code changes they are submitted back to the proper channels.  So during every LTS release you can expect two distinct releases of Linspire and two distinct releases of Freespire.  Linspire is updated and released every 12 months with interim security releases "Service Packs" released every 4 to 6 months.  Linspire 12 and Linspire 14 are based on Ubuntu 22.04 and Linspire 15 and Linspire 16 will be based on Ubuntu 22.04.  We have been looking at basing our distributions on a different base such as Oracle Linux 9 or CentOS Stream 9 for right now we are sticking with Ubuntu.  Freespire is a distribution for Linux enthusiasts who dont want or dont need support.  It is totally free to use, deploy and redistribute on as many systems as you would like whereas Linspire you are paying us to support that distribution.  A new version of Freespire is released every 6 months.  Because those releases are so close together while we do monthly ISO refreshes those refreshes are not point releases or new versions.  Freespire 9 and Freespire 10 are based on Ubuntu 22.04, Freespire 11 and Freespire 12 will be based on Ubuntu 24.04 (Maybe Fedora 38 or CentOS Stream 9 depending)

Our enterprise distributions: PC/OS, Xandros Enterprise Linux and Xandros Community Edition are much much different.  We base these releases on every other LTS release as our business customers do not upgrade as often as our home and consumer releases.  You will get 4 distinct releases from these with new releases every 12 to 14 months and security updates every 6 to 8 months.  So while Xandros Enterprise Linux and Xandros Community Edition 2022.x, 2023.x, 2024.x and 2025.x are based on Ubuntu 22.04.  Xandros Enterprise Linux and Xandros Community Edition  2026.x, 2027.x, 2028.x and 2029.x will be based on Ubuntu 26.04.

Linspire and Freespire are supported for the entire life of that LTS release.  So Linspire and Freespire being based on Ubuntu 22.04 will be supported until 2027.  Our Enterprise distributions are supported for 10 years.  No more and no less.  So our Enterprise Distributions based on Ubuntu 22.04 will be supported by us until 2032.  We do this for all of our business class distributions.  We are one of the ONLY companies left that support our distributions based on Ubuntu 16.04 and Ubuntu 18.04. So how do we do this?  When an LTS release support ends from Canonical our distributions based on that LTS release enters maintenance mode.  There are no new distributions released based on that LTS.  We strip out all of Canonicals Ubuntu repositories and add our own which contains kernel bug fixes, recompiled kernels and updated browsers and other apps so in essence it becomes a franken-Ubuntu.  After that 10 years, it enters Archive mode which we strip out all repositories, updates stop completely and we keep images of that system for customers who still use it for whatever obscure reason.  We still have images for our Gentoo based distributions produced in 2006 and some of our Ubuntu distributions produced in 2008 and beyond and yes we still have some customers who request them.

So this is how we release and maintain our distributions.  Our processes are unique and a lot of times people are surprised by how much work we actually do to maintain all of our distributions.

Xandros OpenDesktop 2021 Released

Today the PC/Opensystems Enterprise development team is pleased to announce the release of Xandros OpenDesktop 2021. This update offers unprecedented reliability and performance. Utilizing the lean XFCE desktop environment, Xandros OpenDesktop allows you to maximize the value of your current hardware, allowing you to decide what applications you want to run and what role you want your system(s) to provide.

This platform has been repeatedly tested and proven to provide rock solid performance and dependability, desktop PC or mobile. Xandros OpenDesktop is the first step in the new direction that PCOS is taking to transition our entire stack to a secure cloud platform. We have reworked OpenDesktop so that not only do we utilize top of the line web based applications, but the user or organization can add any local applications that they choose from the vast Xandros / Ubuntu / Debian repositories. A smaller resource footprint also makes Xandros the logical choice among available commercial Linux desktops for legacy hardware or EOL Chromebooks.

While Xandros OpenDesktop has been demonstrated to run extremely well on traditional desktop, mobile systems and workstations, you can also also purchase one of our own optimized and fully supported desktop / mobile systems from PC/OpenSystems. Because Microsoft Office 365 is so popular among our business and education customers. Xandros OpenDesktop comes in two flavors : 1). Standard which contains Google web apps and 2). 2021 Office 365 which contains all of Microsoft's web applications as well its Bing search engine. Xandros OpenDesktop 2021 Office 365 provides you with the document format compatibility you love. Plus a familiar desktop environment / minus the overhead you can expect from the upcoming Windows 11 OS. Xandros uses less of your hardware’s resources and doesn’t have any of the TPM 2.0 requirements, leaving your systems free to perform their intended function : run your LOB applications. All of this will of course be supported 24x7 by PCOS’ trusted infrastructure.

Xandros OpenDesktop 2021 in any of its flavors is the only commercial Linux desktop alternative to the upcoming Windows 11 that you need. Xandros OpenDesktop 2021 also features :

Full GUI System – XFCE + DWN Tiling Window Manager
LTS Kernel 5.4.0-81
OpenSSH Client
Google Chrome
Ice SSB
Chrome web application framework
NFS / XFS / JFS / BTRFS / ZFS - exFAT support
Multimedia support
Remote Administration capability

Today the development team at PC/Opensystems LLC is pleased to announce the release of Freespire 3.0 and Linspire 7.0.

While both contain common kernel and common utilities, they are targeted towards two different user bases. It is a capable solution for utilizing cloud-based web apps as well as legacy software from our Debian or Ubuntu’s repositories.

Support licensing vs Community support: A Comparison

Some people have asked us, why a commercial Linux distribution? Why not go with a free distribution like Linux Mint or Elementary? There are some advantages to purchasing support from a company vs community support. Here we will outline the differences between a community supported distribution vs a distribution with paid support.

Community forums vs phone and e-mail support:

Black Lab Enterprise Linux comes with 12 months of phone/e-mail/on-site support. Which means - call in or e-mail a support request, and the average initial response time will be 10 minutes. After this response time your issue, whether it be software or hardware related, will be diagnosed and then our support will assist you in fixing the issue. Support times range from 5 minutes for easy solutions to 2 or more hours for more complex issues. If its a longterm issue PCOS support will continue to work with you toward a resolution. Community forums are much more tedious. Community based forums can be difficult to navigate; then, someone who is willing to discuss your issue with you has to 1). offer their support and 2). actually be able to fix your issue. Finally, response time on a community forum depends on the schedules of its contributors, which can vary from several hours to several days – and the issue may just start being discussed.

Donations vs license costs :

Donations to community based distributions are very important. Our own free and open source distribution, Black Lab Linux http://www.blacklablinux.org relies on donations to fund the distribution and keep it running. A donation is not a purchase of a product or service;it's not a requirement for support. It's viewed as a gift, enabling the free product that you use on a daily basis to be maintained and updated. PCOS has heard from its customers and users how they gave donations to certain other distributions receiving no support or lackluster service in return : this is not surprising, for the FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) model. A support license is completely different You are purchasing a product and/or service which comes with support for the term of the license.  Our length of support vary which are : 1 year for desktop, 2 years for server.

On-site service and installation support :

A commercial distribution includes terms in their on-site service clauses which states that if the problem is severe enough, the customer can have a support tech to come and assist the user with the issue for a predetermined fee. The tech can also come on-site and assist in setup and installation of desktops and servers. Most free and community driven distributions don't offer those services, no matter how much they're offered in donations. Some consultants work with specific free and community driven distributions but they are at the mercy of the distribution provider; this means they rely on the software vendor for support issues. This also means that any security or application fixes are provided on an as-available basis – meaning, significant time can elapse, during which systems are vulnerable to data breaches, security issues and problematic operation. These are the comparisons between Black Lab Enterprise Linux, a commercial and licensed Linux distribution and community based distros like Linux Mint, Elementary OS and Ubuntu. What you use depends on your needs : if your data and applications are sensitive and mission-critical, then you need real support in real-time from paid Linux techs and Black Lab Enterprise Linux. If you take your chances using a distro with a community forum for support as a last resort in the event of problems, or have the in-house expertise and the desire to be held liable if something goes wrong, then a free distribution like Black Lab Linux might be your best bet.

At PC/OpenSystems LLC we provide you with the whole stack : hardware, software and the means to support both reliably. If you have any questions on how Black Lab Enterprise Linux can best service you and your organization's computing and data needs, please visit http://www.pc-opensystems.com or contact sales@pc-opensystems.com .

Thank you.

For those wanting a more traditional desktop interface we provide the XFCE user interface as an integration desktop.  This has the latest XFCE user interface and is the full XFCE interface.  It has not been cut down and is selectable from the login screen.

kernel 3.16 is the default kernel upon boot

Signed Linux kernels are provided for use on UEFI/Secureboot enabled systems.

You can download the Black Lab Linux Professional Desktop 6.5 Beta 1 from Sourceforge.  This is a Beta release and is not meant to be used in a production environment.  There is no warranty either expressed or implied with this release.

Black Lab Software: 2015 Outlook

We have already outlined the road map for our software which is viewable from the Black Lab Linux project site.

Here we are outlining the outlook for Black Lab Software Inc. the commercial side including hardware and software.

2014 was a great year for us.  Our growth from 2013 stayed on the incline.

  • Black Lab Professional Desktop and Black Lab Education Desktop had tremendous growth and adoption through 2014 and we expect that to continue through 2015.  We want to add at least 10 new clients and licensee's through 2015.
  • Hardware sales through 2014 also rose.  We have discontinued 85% of our hardware and retained the systems that were the most popular which resulted in the retention of 1 consumer desktop and 2 business desktops.  We had over a 150% increase in hardware sales over 2013 and we plan to double that in 2015.
  • Some of the more popular practices was our ability to preload these systems with whatever software packages the client wanted whether engineering, graphics and animation.
  • The inclusion of KDE as a secondary option to GNOME Shell for the Professional Desktop distribution was well received and we have had great reception and input from customers.
Plans through 2015

  • Create our first ARM release for ARM based systems such as the Raspberry Pi
  • Milestones include Black Lab Education Desktop 6 and Black Lab Professional Desktop 6 with release 7 coming Christmas 2015
  • Retail Intel NUC systems with Black Lab Linux in summer of 2015
  • Release Black Lab Image Creator for Ubuntu 15.04/15.10 with UEFI support.
So those are our plans for Black Lab Software Inc. for 2015

Re-release of Black Lab Linux XFCE

Today we are announcing the re-release of Black Lab Linux XFCE.  We had originally planned to redo the XFCE release and release it branded as Yellow Lab Linux.  Some of our users have expressed to us that it was sort of confusing and we decided we wanted to preserve our brand.  So with that we are releasing Black Lab Linux XFCE 6.0 SR1.1.

While there has not been a ton of changes since our last release of it back in October we did do some significant rework of it.  We installed all updates up to January 19, 2015.  We have also reworked the GUI so that Windows and Mac OS users who come over will not have any difficulty using the system.  So with this release what is new.

1.  Heavily customized XFCE 4.11.4 Desktop
2.  Firefox 35
3.  Thunderbird 31.4  Released on January 19, 2015
4.  GTK 3.14
5.  Font Manager
6.  Fogger for Web Apps
7.  Updated Dropbox
8.  Updated Steam client

Black Lab Linux KDE 6.0 SR1

Today we are announcing that back by popular demand is the KDE release of Black Lab Linux.  We have a long history with KDE and  it has always been one of our more popular releases and the KDE desktop is the most requested desktops for our custom build service.  With this release we are bringing it to the general public.  With this release we made many changes to the KDE desktop to make it more friendly to novices as well as power users alike.  The KDE release like all of our releases of Black Lab Linux is based on the LTS version of Ubuntu and so you can be rest assured of continued support by us and by Canonical

Built on the base of Black Lab Linux 6, the KDE release contains the following software.

KDE 4.14.2
LibreOffice
Firefox 35
Thunderbird with the Lightning Extension
Spotify
Steam
Dropbox
TimeShift
Backup Utility
Dragon Player
VLC
Digikam
All multimedia codecs
Muon Software Center
Firewall utility

And many, many more software packages included and many more waiting to be discovered.

Some of the customizations that we make with Black Lab Linux KDE is that we cut off all unnecessary services and effects so we trim down the memory requirements for the system.  Many people have asked, what do we get that we wouldnt get with vanilla Kubuntu?  We include everything you need as a desktop system completely out of box.  You get streaming music, audio and video, office applications, system management tools, gaming facilities, and the ability to create your own desktop webapps.  So if you use Google Docs, Microsoft Office Online you can use them with Black Lab Linux.  Filesharing is made easy both by industry standard networking tools as well as through Dropbox.  So with that lets go ahead an answer a few questions that users may have.

Q) Will you guys be switching from GNOME3 to KDE now?
A) No, GNOME3 will continue to be our default window manager we are offering KDE as an alternative desktop for users.  Rightfully so because demand has been so high.

Q) Will KDE be offered alongside GNOME3 for professional desktop users?
A) Yes, KDE and GNOME3 are the only two choices users get on the Pro Desktop series.

Why we dont do servers?

I have been asked several times.  Why don't you guys release a server OS?  There is really no technical reason why we don't do a server OS.  I think the more appropriate question is why would we do a server OS?  Linux is fairly good on the server.  We have many broad choices and thats why we don't do a server OS.  The server market is fairly well taken care of.  We work with Red Hat, we work with SUSE Enterprise, and we work with Oracle Linux.  When we go look at an infrastructure we see one of those three, we also see some Windows, Solaris and a few HP-UX boxes. So it was more of a practical decision NOT to do a server release.  Those who need a distribution just for file or print services or a cluster node can utilize Black Lab Linux for that through our CoreOS offering.  But we decided to stick with doing a spectacular desktop build.  When we looked at offering from Red Hat, SUSE and Oracle we looked at it and said there is so much more to desktop computing than what these guys offer.  So we set out to build it and make a system that is user-friendly, commercially supported and one where we listen to you, the user or customer, and build it the way YOU feel it should be built.

When we do get requests for server systems we work with our partners, Red Hat and/or Oracle. If you need more information on our consumer edition and professional desktop offerings of Black Lab Linux please visit the following links.
